Celebrating Water Warriors and Advancing WASH Initiatives
Allison Newsome recently had the honor of participating as a panelist at the inaugural U.S. WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) Convening in Washington, D.C. Sponsored by DigDeep and Water For People, this groundbreaking conference brought together a diverse group of passionate individuals dedicated to addressing water and sanitation challenges both domestically and globally.
Art, Access, and Education: A Vital Dialogue
During the convening, Allison spoke on the Art and Education panel alongside the inspiring Emma Robbins at Aubree Frost's session. The discussion focused on the intersection of art, access, and education in the WASH sector, highlighting how creative solutions can drive awareness and action for water and sanitation issues. It underscored the importance of integrating the arts into STEM fields, fostering STEAM initiatives that promote innovative approaches to problem-solving.
Engaging with Water Warriors
One of the most rewarding aspects of the conference was the opportunity to meet so many 'Water Warriors'—individuals and organizations tirelessly working to ensure clean water and adequate sanitation for all. The energy and dedication of the attendees were truly inspiring, emphasizing the critical work being done to improve water access and hygiene around the world.
Advocacy on the Hill
The convening culminated in a Hill Day, where participants advocated for the WASH Access Data Collection Act. This legislation aims to enhance data collection and reporting on water access, a crucial step toward ensuring that everyone has access to safe and clean water. It was empowering to join forces with fellow advocates and take tangible steps toward influencing policy and driving change.
A Grateful Return to Washington, D.C.
Returning to Washington, D.C., was a delightful experience for Allison. The city’s vibrancy and historical significance added an extra layer of excitement to the event. The teams at DigDeep and Water For People organized a meaningful conference, providing a platform for important discussions and advocacy efforts.
Looking Ahead
This incredible experience has instilled a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to the WASH sector. The connections made, the knowledge shared, and the collective passion for making a difference have left an indelible mark. Representing the 'A' in 'STEAM' continues to be a driving force in Allison's work, and she looks forward to continuing this vital mission alongside fellow Water Warriors.
